Request for Prisoners to view their deceased relative

Request for prisoners to view their deceased relative, must be father, mother, brother, sister and children. Prisoners at the Mazaruni Prison and New Amsterdam Prison and their relatives who are living in Georgetown area can submit a request to Prison Headquarters at least three (03) days before burial and MUST walk with Identification Card/Passport.


Proceduresfor viewing of Deceased Relative of Prisoners


1.       Permission must be sought in writing for a Prisoner to view a deceased relative.


2.      The letter must be addressed to the Officer-in-Charge of the Prison where the
Prisoner is incarcerated. The name of the deceased person, relationship, as
well as details on the funeral arrangement must be provided, documentary
evidence such as the postmortem results or a death report from registered
medical practitioner must be supplied along with the letter of request.


3.      The letter must also state clearly, along with the address at which of the
following locations the viewing will take place.

·        
Funeral Home

·        
Residence

·        
Church

4.      On receipt of the request, the Officer-in-Charge will validate the information
provided. The request, along with a recommendation, will be submitted to the
Director of Prisons for approval.


5.      The written will be waived in cases where religious practice or other circumstances
dictate that burial must occur in a matter of hours.


6.      Permission for viewing of deceased person will only be granted for immediate and close
relations of the prisoner.


7.      The prisoner must remain in view of the escorting Officer at all times.


8.     Transportation will be provided by the Prisoner’s relative for the escorting rank and the
prisoner to the viewing and back to the Prison. The relative who made the
request, may accompany the prisoner and escorting Officer, in the vehicle.


9.      In the event the Service vehicle is used, the relative of the Prisoner will stand
the total cost of the Journey.


10.  Fees will be paid on advance, in accordance with standard overtime rates.


11.   The Prisoner will be returned to Prison immediately after the viewing of his/her
deceased relative.
